Background of the Study
Chronic illnesses, defined as long-lasting conditions requiring ongoing medical attention, have become a significant health concern globally, particularly in developing nations. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma are responsible for a substantial proportion of mortality and morbidity worldwide. In Nigeria, chronic illnesses represent a growing burden on healthcare systems, with Federal Medical Centers playing a pivotal role in their management. These centers are critical in delivering specialized care, particularly for underserved populations in regions like Plateau State.
Clinical nursing encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, including assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and evaluation, all tailored to meet the needs of chronically ill patients. Nurses are integral in ensuring adherence to treatment regimens, monitoring disease progression, and providing patient education to enhance self-management. In Plateau State, the role of clinical nursing is increasingly recognized as crucial for bridging gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in settings where resources and medical personnel are limited.
However, despite the acknowledged importance of clinical nursing, challenges persist. These include inadequate staffing, limited training opportunities, and insufficient access to advanced medical equipment. The prevalence of chronic illnesses, compounded by lifestyle changes and urbanization, places additional strain on the existing healthcare infrastructure. Consequently, there is a need for empirical studies to explore and highlight the contributions of clinical nursing in chronic disease management within this context.
Statement of the Problem
Chronic illnesses impose significant physical, emotional, and economic burdens on individuals, families, and society at large. While the importance of clinical nursing in managing these conditions is well-established globally, the extent of its impact within the Federal Medical Centers in Plateau State remains underexplored. These facilities, which cater to a diverse and often underserved population, face challenges in adequately addressing the rising prevalence of chronic diseases.
There is limited empirical evidence on how clinical nurses in Plateau State contribute to improving patient outcomes in chronic illness management. Additionally, factors such as insufficient training, inadequate nurse-to-patient ratios, and resource constraints hinder optimal care delivery. Understanding the specific roles, challenges, and outcomes associated with clinical nursing practices in this context is essential for designing interventions that enhance the effectiveness of chronic illness management.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of clinical nursing in managing chronic illnesses within Federal Medical Centers in Plateau State. It covers the responsibilities, challenges, and outcomes associated with clinical nursing practices. Limitations include potential challenges in obtaining accurate data due to variations in record-keeping practices and the possibility of response bias from participants.
